I first time I tried this wine was at Vinisud in 2008. It is almost compulsory at those enormous expositions to sample a lot of wines and quite a few of them are easily forgotten. This wine however stuck in the memory and was the first thing I talked about on my return. The warm and enthusiastic welcome was topped by this fantastic and highly original wine. In 1937 the grandfather of the current vigneron bought a plot of land and started producing wine in this manner. Having skipped a generation this wine made a return a few years ago. So what is special about it? Well it is made with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Gros Manseng, the fermentation takes place in very modern equipment it is in the maturation that all the work is done. There is no fining or filtering and left in barrels exposed to the elements during the winter and bottled at the end of the following summer. This gives just a gentle amount of maderisation, this gives it a slight toasty flavour that combines perfectly with the zestiness of the Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The Gros Manseng gives a fabulous aromatic quality and the texture is round and relatively rich. The light alcohol content makes this a delicious wine, well thought out and perfectly executed. A great accompaniment to freshwater fish or some goat's cheese. This wine must be tasted at least once by every wine lover.
