Who are we?
We are a group of enthusiasts with many years experience in the wine trade. Seized by a desire to share our passion for seeking out the new and exciting, we've created blakeneys.
The idea to start a new company came from George Adams. He has worked for quite some time in the wine business; with Oddbins, initially in England and then in France, where he has lived since 2001. “I loved the freedom I had working in a small but extremely busy shop with all the cross channel shoppers or booze cruisers as they are often called”. He left the Cité Europe shop and helped establish the Oddbins superstore in Calais. More recently he has been developing a partnership with Guy Boursot of Wine Consultants SARL. “Here I have learnt an enormous amount about running an independent company. I expanded my knowledge of the wine business with all the diverse aspects, the work is loads harder but the rewards are infinitely greater”. In addition to his work with Guy, he has been creating blakeneys.
What can we offer that might be lacking from other outlets?
We are an independent company; we choose wines because we love them, we believe in them and think they deserve greater exposure. We would like to think that you will as well. We get real joy when we discover a new wine and we want to share this pleasure with you.
Of course there will be some old favourites but we want to keep the list fresh, meaning we are continually researching – tasting in other words – and looking for the best.
We want to sell wines with character, a story behind them, that not only taste great but have depth and interest. Who's interested in a multi million turnover of safe, bland product? We want to know that the producer is as committed and passionate about making the wine as we are about drinking it. We will look for information on the terroir; the landscape, the soil, the grape varietal, the method, the experience, the history, the sun, the moon, the year and the blend, when selecting wine for our site. Our wines will come from many different countries but will share a quality of dimension and interest.
Our wines need not be expensive but must offer value for money and most importantly pleasure.
We don't currently deliver to Britain but we have a pickup point in a fabulous wine shop just a stone's throw from Calais in the beautiful town of Ardres. This shop is Boursot's Wine Collection – www.boursot.co.uk – and it is very easy to find and there plenty of great bars and restaurants for you to take in some of France not just the shopping centres.
