Meerlust Rubicon,Stellenbosch 200426.00 € (equiv 34.67 €/Ltr)13.5% Alc/VolThis distinguished estate was founded in1693 when the governor of the Cape granted the land to Henning Hüsing, who named the farm Meerlust (love of the sea) after the sea breezes that blew inland from False Bay. The property was sold to Johannes Albertus Myburgh in 1757 and today Hannes Myburgh continues the dynasty of eight generations. The Meerlust flagship wine is the Rubicon, a Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon always the dominant component, in this vintage 63%, Merlot and Cabernet Franc making up the remaining proportion. The Rubicon, first made in 1984, is an intense wine that has evolved over the vintages the 2004 being the latest release. Probably a little too early to drink, ideally another five years of careful cellaring and the powerful aromas of cassis and cedarwood will be in full harmony. The dense fruit flavours will combine with the acidity and silky tannins to produce a Pauillac like wine. This is a masterful piece of wine making.
