There is no compromise to this wine. It is the most powerful and dramatic expression of the Nebbiolo grape. Often described as "the wine of kings, the king of wines", this wine is steeped in tradition and patronised by the nobility of Turin and Savoy. Centred around the commune of Serralunga d'Alba, the vines are planted in an natural amphitheatre trapping the sunshine and drawing minerals from the clay limestone soil. Nebbiolo is a late ripening grape variety sometimes still on the vine well past mid-October. The maceration process is long to extract the maximum from the grapes which gives the famous colour, the dark purple with reddish hues. The aromas are full of layers from plums and liquorice to dried roses and tar typical of Nebbiolo. The wine has a rich and complex character with pronounced tannins and acidity and therefore will age and should not be drunk too young. The oak maturation gives a firm structure and is not always easy to match with food but meats such a venison and boar are ideal to bring out the best.
