Nebbiolo some say it the word comes from the local word for fog, Nebbia, but others particularly in the area say the name derives from nobile or noble. The local growers believe it merits such a grandiose name, they have restricted its planting to carefully selected areas where the soil is just right and is given the best position on the slopes, south west facing. The variety only represents 3% of the regions annual production and is used to make the world famous Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Nebbiolo d'Alba is a less daunting version, a stepping stone to the more majestic wines. There is a complexity and balance to this wine that shows the best of this variety, soft and gentle. There is plenty of character to accompany richer and hearty meals.
